Welcome to Vital Assurance. I'm Keren, and I want to share a bit about my background.
Coming from a European family, food was always the centre of everything that we did (and still is). However WHOLESOME, CLEAN, HEALTHY food was never on the menu. I was raised on foods like sour cream sandwiches, herring in an oily tomato sauce, cheese filled blintzes and regular take away Chinese MSG filled dinners to name a few. I was never one to shy away from the kitchen and I can still clearly remember cooking with my grandmother from the age of 11, helping her prepare big family meals whenever I had the opportunity, and I gained my love of cooking from her.
It has taken me some time to find the career that excites and completes me. I always thought that I wanted a career in the medical field and after working hard through secondary school I completed a degree in Physiotherapy, but I realised that this was not what I wanted and it didn't fulfil me. From there I ventured into a number of different (but related) careers before and after having my two boys. It wasn't until one day in 2013, when I was having coffee with a close family member discussing how unhappy I was at work, she suggested that I complete my Certificates in Fitness since I had such a passion for people's health, and start a career in personal training. That afternoon I enrolled, resigned from my full time employment, and four months later I started working for myself as a personal trainer, which I have found extremely rewarding.
In 2014 a friend referred me to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and I was immediately taken by their "not one size fits all" approach to health and wellness. I also embarked on a clean eating lifestyle, and I found that what I was learning about at IIN was complementing this. I emptied my pantry of all processed foods, specifically refined carbs and sugars. Not only was I changing my lifestyle for the better but also my whole family was benefiting. I returned to the kitchen spending many hours there experimenting with new foods and new flavours, making and creating delicious and nutrient rich meals and snacks. I love that I am able to take control of what goes into my, and my family's, body. A body that we only get one chance to nourish and nurture.
Having lost my father to a brain tumour in June 2010, and having cancer and chronic disease in my family history, I was acutely sensitive to what I (and my children) might be genetically up against in the future. When I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease during 2015 my clean eating was credited with preventing it from being even more debilitating. I have seen a marked improvement in my live blood analysis and physical symptoms since being diagnosed and feel confident in the fact that this will only to continue to improve as I continue to feed my body with this wholesome goodness.
This is my story. Everyone has a different experience, needs, wants and goals. My goal is to share my experiences with you and learn about yours to help you overcome whatever it is that is holding you back from being the best you that you can be.
